.Make it personal – If you are trying to memorize theories or principles or even basic facts, it is much easier to remember them if you associate it into something personal to you like designating family members, experiences and even feelings. For example, in your business class you have to remember a marketing theory. You can assign an annoying experience in the store sometime ago to explain for that marketing theory, much better if it actually is a great example of the application of that theory.
.Read it out loud – It is less complicated to imprint an idea or information in our heads if we read it out loud. Reading it and hearing ourselves say it works by using two of our senses incorporating such information. Our eyes and ears are both sending the same information which makes it simpler to stick to our heads.
.Make a picture – If there is too much information to memorize, use a diagram or make an image. Imagine getting inside your classroom and you look at everyone and where they are seated. If you would try to recall them you would imagine your classroom and exactly where they sat, and who’s beside them. It is less difficult to recall because you have a mental image of them inside the room.
.Chunking – This is one of the most commonly utilised procedures of memorizing. Shortening the phrases into two to three letters assists the brain accommodate a lot of information. Studies showed that our brain can process information even if the letters in a word is scrambled except the first and last letter. Example, the term “experiment” can be shortened to “ex” or “expe” so that when you want to recall “experimental studies” you can just assign the words “exstud” to it.
.Write it – There is something about watching the strokes of our pen formed the phrases which make it easier to remember. I think this technique is particularly effective for people who have photographic memory because if they want to recall the things they wrote, they can just imagine their selves writing it.
.Familiarity – If you keep forgetting things at home, designate a particular spot in which you put everything important like keys and bills. Example would be your study table or working table. It need to be the spot you go to instantly after you get home. Like if I get inside the house I usually go straight to the kitchen. Chances are, before I walk out, I’d pass by the kitchen again. So if I don’t want to forget about keys or papers or bills, I make sure I place it in a spot in the kitchen conspicuous enough for me to always notice.
To improve your memory, it has to take a ton of hard work and skill. Some people invest hours in sharpening their memories like the mental athletes. For an average Joe, what is necessary is that we clear our minds and unwind. A troubled and anxiety pressured mind usually create blocks inside our memory lane and inhibit recall.
